Speaker Profile:  Texas Tornados

Texas TornadosThe Texas Tornado are a Junior A hockey team located in Frisco, Texas, USA. The team joined the North American Hockey League's Central division in 1999 (and moved into the newly-formed southern division three years later) while located in North Richland Hills, Texas, and have enjoyed unprecedented success since their expansion year. The Tornado hold the NAHL regular season.

The Tornado play their home games at the 6,000-seat Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco. All of their games are shown live on the B2 Network in a pay-per-view format or season pass, and for free with an audio-only format.

On May 13, 2006, the Tornado won their third straight Robertson Cup, defeating the Bozeman Icedogs. This would be the first time in over 15 years that a team won three consecutive Robertson Cups. The Texas Tornado are owned and operated by the Schlegel Sports Group.

Past Speaker Profile:  Donna Coggenshall - NCTCOG

Donna Coggenshall

Donna is Research Manager in the Research and Information Services Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments. During her more than 20 years of professional experience in both the public and private sectors, she has worked on a variety of projects and programs many of which focused on demographics or economics. She holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Donna spoke with us about the projects going on in the North Texas Council of Governments. She told us how the region is growing and how diversified we are becoming, and how the region is changing. We also learned a little about how transportation needs are determined from their studies.

Update:  Not For Sale

Daniel Merrill, one of our Camp RYLA campers, came back from RYLA and spoke to us about his experiences at RYLA and mentioned his non-profit organization Not For Sale. He wanted to update us on how the organization is doing:

I hope it hasn't been too long and that everything finds you well! I am writing regarding the Not For Sale club that I mentioned last July, I remembered that the club wanted to be updated on its progress and actions. The club was officially recognized and formed last week (after passing through the channels of faculty) and will be holding its first meeting this next week. If you want more information on the movement itself, I suggest the Not For Sale website, http://www.notforsalecampaign.org/

I also wanted to let you know that I am on the RYLA Advisory Group and to thank you for everything you did for me and my friends. You have made an large and permanent impact on my life!

Thank you for all your kindness and support!

Daniel Merrill

Raffle:  Every Week!

Show me the money!  We will have a “BIG JACKPOT” raffle drawing every week.  Here are the rules.

-          The drawing will be held every week after the speaker concludes.  Tickets can be bought up to that time.  $1 for 1 ticket, $5 gets 6 tickets.

-          A ticket will be drawn at the end of the meeting.

-          But the weekly winner, will not automatically get the jackpot.  To ensure we have a BIG JACKPOT, we then ask the winner to draw the “winning card” from a standard deck of 52 cards.  If they pull the “winning card”, they get the BIG JACKPOT.

-          How do we determine the “winning card”?  After the jackpot is won, we will draw one card from a standard deck of 52 cards.  That card becomes the “winning card.”  It is reinserted into the deck.

-          If a non-winning card is drawn by the weekly drawing winner, that card is discarded.  This means the odds of drawing the “winning card” will improve every week as the BIG JACKPOT grows.

-          The jackpot is rolled over every week until the “winning card” is drawn.

-          The value of the BIG JACKPOT will be reported in the newsletter.

-       Half of the winning pot goes to the Addison Midday Rotary Foundation.
