Speaker Profile:  Daniel Merrill

Daniel Merrill was one of the students our club sponsored at Camp RYLA. He told us when he came back from RYLA that he was starting a club to help end human trafficing at Jesuit. That club was officially recognized and formed last week and will be holding its first meeting this week. Daniel will be coming to speak to us about this worthy cause.

You can check out their web site at http://www.notforsalecampaign.com

Past Speaker Profile:  Akanksha Sharma

Akanksha Sharma

Akanksha was an Ambassadorial Scholar assigned to Hong Kong. She came and spoke to us about her time in Hong Kong and traveling in the immediate area, meeting the people, working with the various Rotary Clubs, and helping the special needs children learn to speak English (a feat as she did not speak Chinese!). Akanksha was born in India, but came to the US. She went to college at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and was accepted to medical School at UT Southwestern. She put off medical school for one year to go to Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong Akanksha went to Rotary meetings every week and studied in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy at HKYU Family Institute. She traveled between China, Taiwan and the Philippines and became quite adventurous during her time in Hong Kong. Akanksha ate every food (well, almost every food) put before her and asked what it was afterward. She was afraid if she knew what she was eating she would not even taste it! She told us that the trip changed her life and that Rotary made it all possible.

Raffle:  Every Week!

Show me the money!  We will have a “BIG JACKPOT” raffle drawing every week.  Here are the rules.

-          The drawing will be held every week after the speaker concludes.  Tickets can be bought up to that time.  $1 for 1 ticket, $5 gets 6 tickets.

-          A ticket will be drawn at the end of the meeting.

-          But the weekly winner, will not automatically get the jackpot.  To ensure we have a BIG JACKPOT, we then ask the winner to draw the “winning card” from a standard deck of 52 cards.  If they pull the “winning card”, they get the BIG JACKPOT.

-          How do we determine the “winning card”?  After the jackpot is won, we will draw one card from a standard deck of 52 cards.  That card becomes the “winning card.”  It is reinserted into the deck.

-          If a non-winning card is drawn by the weekly drawing winner, that card is discarded.  This means the odds of drawing the “winning card” will improve every week as the BIG JACKPOT grows.

-          The jackpot is rolled over every week until the “winning card” is drawn.

-          The value of the BIG JACKPOT will be reported in the newsletter.

-       Half of the winning pot goes to the Addison Midday Rotary Foundation.
